Statement of Purpose

The Pelican Health Hotel is asking for a loan of US.$2, 000,000 in order to purchase equipment, inventory and a suitable property for conducting the business of alternative medicine and natural health, to make improvements on the property and maintain sufficient cash reserve and working capital . 'I'he sum of US $2,000,000 should be sufficient to finance the opening 1)phase of' this new business and bring it to the point where the business can operate on an ongoing basis as a profitable enterprise.

A Description of The Pelican Health Hotel

'I'he Pelican Health Hotel Resort is a medical company. specializing in providing services in the area of alternative medicine and natural health to both Barbadians and visitors with a heavy emphasis on medical tourism. The company hopes to open for business late in 1999.
We expect the demand for our services to be great and remain steady throughout the year with greatest demand at the height of the tourist season [December -March ]. We plan to build up demand through severalmarketing strategies such as direct mailings and advertisements on radio .television. the print media and on the WWW.
.

The market
The Pelican Health Hotel Resort will provide high quality state of the art alternative medicine and natural health services in a luxurious spa environment to both Barbadians and visitors with a strong emphasis on medical tourism. We define a medical tourist as any person who visits Barbados for health reasons. Although the concept of medical tourism is relatively new to the Caribbean, health and tourism experts estimate that 2% of Americans who visit the Caribbean do so for health reasons. In addition there is a significant number of persons in the U. S. and other countries including Barbados who do not respond well to conventional treatment of their conditions or who simply prefer an alternative approach to managing their - health. Many of these people would be willing to travel to Barbados and pay top dollar for specialized treatments with alternative medicine which may be unavailable or unreasonably expensive in their own country. A certain percentage of medical tourists may be considered spa clientele. 'Ihese are reasonably healthy persons who simply want to reduce stress, and enjoy a health oriented vacation.

In Barbados and the rest of the Caribbean , alternative medicine and medical tourism present a viable virgin market.. We aim to capitalize on this previously untapped economic reservoir by providing the region's most comprehensive range of services in this field. We view the entire upper and upper middle income segment of Barbadian society as a potential local market which will keep demand for our services fairly constant throughout the year. We consider individuals in the upper income bracket of the contiguous Caribbean nations as a potential regional market, since many of these people are accustomed to visiting Barbados for medical services or to conduct business and would probably welcome the opportunity to utilize the services we provide. Each tourist who visits Barbados will be considered a potential client and thus a part of our international market which will also include persons attracted to Barbados as a direct result of the services we offer and our strategic marketing. It should be pointed out that many of the services we hope to offer are being offered by a few non professionals in a most haphazard and potentially dangerous way.

'I'he Barbadian and regional markets will be reached by radio, television and newspaper advertising as well as by direct presentations. The international market will be reached by direct mail , and advertising in the health, and vacation sections of selected newspapers and magazines. We do not anticipate any difficulty reaching this market since the demand for high quality alternative medicine and natural health services including spas is on the increase in Barbados and worldwide. It should be emphasized that from a financial perspective, alternative medicine and natural health represents a substantial market. For example in 1993 The New England Journal of Medicine reported that in 1990 Americans made an estimated 425 million visits to providers of unconventional therapy. This number exceeds the number of visits to U.S. primary care physicians (388 million). Expenditures associated with the use of unconventional therapy In 1990 amounted to approximately $13.7 billion, three quarters of which ($10.3 billion) was paid out of pocket. This figure is comparable to the $12.8 billion spent annually for all hospitalizations in the U.S.

'I'he Competition
There is no facility anywhere in the Caribbean offering a full range of state of the art alternative medicine and natural health services in a luxurious atmosphere as proposed for the Pelican Health Hotel. Our competition can be classified in two groups, clinics and resorts and spas.

A. Clinics.

There are several clinics in the Caribbean offering alternative medicine to the local Population. Most of these are of dubious quality and do not promote the ambiance required to attract the upper classes of the local society, much less medical tourists and consequently pose no threat to The Pelican Health Resort Hotel. A few clinics in the Caribbean offer high quality alternative medicine, however these are very restricted in scope, For example, The Immunoaugmentative Therapy Clinic in the Bahamas only treats cancer. This restricted range of services reduces the ability of these clinics to compete effectively for a greater share of the market. Other clinics in the Caribbean offer a reasonably wide range of services but generally do not provide accommodations suitable for medical tourists. 'I'hese clinics attract patients from other Caribbean countries. Apart from failing to provide quality accommodations , these clinics do not generally seek to attract medical tourists from outside of the region and therefore
